Our mission
We train the specialists who walk alongside grocers, and the grocers themselves, to keep local food access alive, one town at a time.
The approach
A store that offers what no one else can becomes irreplaceable to the town it feeds. We stabilize the root structure, pricing, assortment, labor, and bake the recipe for a successful transition into the daily mindset of running a strong store.
For specialists
Level 1, RGI's Rural Grocery Transition Specialist course, qualifies you to help a grocer move through transition. The Academy picks up from there. A cascade, not a catalog: each level opens only to graduates of the level before it.
Offered by K-State's Rural Grocery Initiative. The prerequisite for everything that follows.
Twelve weeks on valuation, profitability, and the psychology of identity transition.
Bi-weekly case work with other specialists, open to Level 1 graduates and up.

Meet the founder
Former rural grocery store owner (Cecil K's Hometown Market, Holton, KS, 2018 to 2023); startup grocery mentor for K-State's Rural Grocery Initiative; architect and lead facilitator of the Rural Grocery Transition Specialist program since its founding in 2022, the only national training program dedicated to rural grocery succession support.
In 2017, she co-founded Cecil K's with no prior background in grocery, taking a paragraph of a vision and roughly a million dollars through business planning, construction, and full store design. The store navigated the 2020 pandemic with curbside, delivery, and 90 days of daily Facebook Live updates. A second location opened in 2022. At the end of 2023, Carly navigated her own exit, experiencing firsthand the reality of untangling a shared business and finding footing on the other side of something she had built.

Rural Transition Academy is a for-profit learning institution offering training, technology, and resources that work on business transition success from both long-term and short-term perspectives. We serve rural areas in Kansas, Western Missouri, and across the United States. With Canada and Japan facing the same forces, a global market is a matter of time.
